bed bath & beyond

  • Bed Bath & Beyond plans to shutter about 200 stores over the next two years.
  • On July 8, the company published an investor relations presentation that revealed Bed Bath & Beyond intends to "lean into store closures" and "leverage significant lease expirations coming due."
  • The Bed Bath & Beyond has floundered in recent years, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and previous leadership spats and financial struggles.

Bed Bath & Beyond is looking to shut down about 200 "redundant" stores over the next two years.

The company announced the closures in its first-quarter investor-relations presentation. The slide deck said the closures would "mostly" affect Bed Bath & Beyond. The company also owns retail chains like Buy Buy Baby and Cost Plus Inc.

Going forward, Bed Bath & Beyond will "lean into store closures" and "leverage significant lease expirations coming due" in an effort to turn things around, according to the presentation. The company has also cut "expenses associated with the maintenance of stores."

The majority of Bed Bath & Beyond store associates and certain corporate employees are furloughed because of the pandemic.

The pandemic hit Bed Bath & Beyond hard, prompting the retailer to temporarily close all of its stores on March 23. The company suffered a net loss of $302.29 million in the first quarter, down from $371.09 million a year ago. Sales plunged 49%, sinking from $1.31 billion from $2.57 billion in 2019.

In an earnings call with analysts, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer Gustavo Arnal said the drop in sales occurred "primarily due to the temporary store closures." Most of Bed Bath & Beyond's stores have since reopened.

But Bed Bath & Beyond's struggles date back to beyond the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, as it has faced declining sales. Former Target Chief Marketing Officer Mark Tritton took on the role of CEO in November, several months after a group of activist investors pushed for the ouster of CEO Steven Temares. The retailer announced its plans to close 44 stores across eight states earlier this year.

  • Luxury kitchenware chain Sur La Table has filed for Chapter 11 protection, becoming the latest in a growing line of retailers filing for bankruptcy amid the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The company is reportedly working on a sale with Fortress Investment Group, which recently made an acquisition of burger chain Krystal.
  • "This sale process will result in a revitalized Sur La Table, positioned to thrive in a post COVID-19 retail environment," Jason Goldberger, Sur La Table's chief executive, said in a statement.

High-end kitchenware chain Sur La Table is the latest retailer filing for bankruptcy following temporary store closures amid the pandemic.

The Seattle-based luxury kitchen retailer said on Wednesday it plans to continue operations of successful stores, in-person and online cooking classes, and its e-commerce business.

The privately-held brand has closed over 50 stores, according to the company's FAQ page.

It filed for bankruptcy after contemplating the "rationalization of its national store footprint" and some store closures in the current retail environment.

The news comes after the company permanently laid off roughly 20% of its staff last month.

"This sale process will result in a revitalized Sur La Table, positioned to thrive in a post COVID-19 retail environment," Jason Goldberger, CEO of Sur La Table said in a statement.

Sur La Table reportedly plans to sell 70 stores to California-based Fortress Investment, which recently acquired burger chain Krystal.

The company is known to offer cooking classes at its retail stores, but those will be shifted to only certain locations and its digital platform.

After temporarily closing stores in March, the retailer reopened 121 stores across the country on July 4.

Sur La Table operates stores across the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Berkeley, Walnut Creek, and San Jose. It was established in 1972 and has been owned by private-equity firm Investcorp since 2011.

  • Two of Britain's best-known high-street retailers, John Lewis and Boots, announced more than 5,000 job cuts on Thursday.
  • John Lewis said it would cut 1,300 jobs, while Boots plans to axe 4,000 jobs. Both retailers are closing down stores and struggling with consumer footfall amid the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Other retailers in the UK that recently warned of job cuts running into the thousands include luxury department store Harrods, sandwich chain Pret A Manger, and fast-food outlet Burger King.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Britain's high-end department store John Lewis and beauty retailer Boots have announced plans to slash a combined 5,300 jobs as part of their store closure plans.

John Lewis said on Thursday that it would permanently shut eight of its flagship stores, putting 1,300 jobs at risk.

Boots said it would axe 4,000 jobs and close 48 optician stores.

The eight shuttered John Lewis stores were struggling financially even before the pandemic, it said. Among them are its travel hub shops at Heathrow Airport and St Pancras International railway station.

Before the COVID-19 lockdown, 40% of the retailer's sales were online. Now, John Lewis expects online sales to make up "closer to 60 to 70 percent of total sales" this year and next, it said.

"Redundancies are always an absolute last resort and we will do everything we can to keep as many partners as possible within our business," Sharon White, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, said in a statement.

The job cuts at Boots represent 7% of the health and beauty chain's workforce.

Walgreens Boots Alliance, its parent firm, said the pandemic had cost between $700 million to $750 million in sales, and that footfall had dropped 85%.

"Shopping patterns are evolving more rapidly than ever as consumers further embrace digital options, spurring us to accelerate our ongoing investments in digital transformation and neighborhood health destinations," CEO Stefano Pessina said in a statement.

Other retailers in the UK that recently warned of job cuts running into the thousands include luxury department store Harrods, sandwich chain Pret A Manger, and fast-food outlet Burger King.

  • The Ascena Retail Group will shutter at least 157 Lane Bryant stores.
  • Ascena also owns Catherines and Justice, as well as Ann Inc., the parent company of both Ann Taylor and Loft.
  • The Lane Bryant closures will hit malls and standalone stores across the United States.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Over a hundred Lane Bryant stores will shutter as the clothing shop's parent company struggles with the effects of COVID-19.

The Ascena Retail Group also owns Justice and Catherines, as well as the parent company of both Ann Taylor and Loft. In a July 23 Chapter 11 filing, the company announced its intent "to close and wind down approximately 1,100 underperforming brick-and-mortar store locations" across its 2,800 brick-and-mortar stores in the United States and Canada.

According to the Chapter 11 filing, the closures will affect malls and standalone stores across the country.

In its filing, Ascena attributed the closures to the coronavirus pandemic, saying "the effects of the COVID-19 accelerated the need for a long-term strategic solution to the Debtors' balance sheet and operating model." The Lane Bryant stores slated for closure were chosen based on their lack of profitability, sales trends, occupancy costs, and other macro factors.

The remaining Lane Bryant stores will continue to operate, as will the plus-size clothing retailer's e-commerce operations.

Here are the Lane Bryant stores that are slated to close:

  • Tailored Brands could close up to 500 stores as it restructures in bankruptcy.
  • The company owns Men's Wearhouse, Jos. A. Bank, Moores, and K&G Fashion Superstore.
  • In a court filing on Sunday, Tailored Brands revealed a list of the first 100 stores it plans to close.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Tailored Brands, owner of Men's Wearhouse, Jos. A. Bank, Moores, and K&G Fashion Superstore, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sunday.

It had announced in July that it planned to close as many as 500 stores while it weathered the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

In bankruptcy court filings on Sunday, the company revealed the first 100 leases it plans to reject.

"The coronavirus pandemic has altered the way we live and work. There are fewer in-person meetings, less going out, and postponed wedding celebrations, whereas our clothes are better suited to being out and about. That, in turn, means the need for fewer stores," the company said on an informational page about its restructuring.

It continued: "We shared in July that some stores will close as a result and, while we are still making decisions about which stores will be affected, our actions will help us right-size our store fleet. In the meantime, rest assured, the Chapter 11 process includes specific protections that allow us to provide a consistent shopping experience for our customers."

The list of initial closures includes 33 Men's Wearhouse stores, 64 Jos. A. Bank stores, and three Moores stores.

Here are the stores listed in the first round of closures:

  • Pizza Express said it may close 15% of its UK restaurants as part of a restructuring that puts up to 1,100 jobs at risk.
  • The pizza chain also plans to transfer majority ownership from its current owner, Chinese private equity firm Hony Capital, to debtholders so it can secure funding for future growth.
  • Hony Capital intends to retain ownership of the group's mainland China business, a spokesperson told Business Insider.

UK-based chain Pizza Express said on Tuesday it could close 15% of its restaurants in the UK, putting up to 1,100 jobs at risk.

The company also plans to transfer majority ownership to debtholders to secure financing for future growth, it said. Its current owner, Chinese private equity firm Hony Capital, intends to retain ownership of the group's mainland China business, a Pizza Express spokesperson told Business Insider.

All 449 restaurants across the UK were trading profitably before the coronavirus lockdown, the company said, but after businesses shut their doors it reviewed the viability of each site. The review is still ongoing, but up to 67 restaurants could close, it said, costing up to 1,100 people their jobs.

"It is with a heavy heart that we expect to permanently close a proportion of our restaurants, losing valued team members in the process," Zoe Bowley, UK and Ireland managing director, said in a statement.

The group said that "reducing the size of its estate will help it to protect 9,000 jobs."

The pizza chain, founded 55 years ago, may launch a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) — where it reaches an agreement with debtors to repay part or all of its debt over a period of time — in the "near future," it said.

More details are expected to be announced once the CVA is formally launched.

Pizza Express reopened 60 sites last month after the coronavirus lockdown lifted. As the government's "Eat Out to Help Out" initiative rolled out at the beginning of August, offering 50% off diners' bills, the chain had 166 restaurants open in the UK, with plans to reopen others.

  • Stein Mart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Wednesday, and is also exploring a sale of its e-commerce business.
  • The company was struggling to revive sales even before the coronavirus pandemic hit.
  • "The combined effects of a challenging retail environment coupled with the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have caused significant financial distress on our business," CEO and CFO Hunt Hawkins said in a statement.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Off-price retailer Stein Mart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Wednesday and said it would close "a significant portion, if not all" of its stores.

The company is also exploring a sale of its e-commerce business.

"The combined effects of a challenging retail environment coupled with the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have caused significant financial distress on our business," CEO and CFO Hunt Hawkins said in a statement.

"The company has determined that the best strategy to maximize value will be a liquidation of its assets pursuant to an organized going out of business sale," he added. "The company lacks sufficient liquidity to continue operating in the ordinary course of business. I would like to thank all of our employees for their dedication and support."

Stein Mart operates 281 stores in 30 states. It sells clothing, accessories, home decor, and shoes at discounted prices.

The retailer was struggling to revive sales even before the pandemic hit, and temporary closures dragged sales down further.

In the company's first quarter, which would have been most affected by pandemic-related closures, total sales declined 57.3% year-over-year, to $134.3 million. Stein Mart also reported a sales decline in the quarter before the pandemic hit.

It has laid off a significant number of corporate employees at its Jacksonville headquarters, the Jacksonville Daily Record reported Tuesday.

  • Brooks Brothers announced that Authentic Brands Group and SPARC Group LLC were the winning bidders for the suiting company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month.
  • ABG and SPARC increased its initial offer of $305 million to $325 million, and agreed to keep at least 125 retail locations operating.
  • ABG, a retail management company, and SPARC, a joint venture between ABG and mall owner Simon Properties, have previously worked together to purchase distressed retailers like Aeropostale and Juicy Couture.
  • WHP Global, another retail management company, was also interested in the sale but bowed out of the race on August 10.

Brooks Brothers announced on Tuesday evening that Authentic Brands Group and SPARC Group LLC were selected as the winning bidders in the sale of the bankrupt suiting company for $325 million. The purchase requires bankruptcy court approval. The buyers have also committed to continue operating at least 125 Brooks Brothers retail locations.

Authentic Brands Group is a retail management company that purchases distressed retailers who enter into Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company's portfolio includes well-known brands like Barneys, Juicy Couture, and Frye. SPARC is a joint venture backed by Authentic Brands Group and mall owner Simon Properties. The two companies have previously come together under SPARC to purchase Forever 21 and Aeropostale, and entered into an asset purchase agreement with Lucky Brand in July.

SPARC and ABG first expressed interest in purchasing America's oldest clothing company in early July. Their initial bid for Brooks Brothers was for $305 million and also included the commitment to acquire at least 125 Brooks Brothers retail locations, which secured the group as the stalking horse bid. WHP Global, another retail management company, was also interested in purchasing Brooks Brothers but bowed out of the race on August 10.

Brooks Brothers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 8. The company was founded in 1918 and survived numerous tumultuous eras in U.S. history, from the civil war to the Great Depression. But as workwear has become increasingly casual in recent years and sales have moved online, the company has faltered. The coronavirus pandemic has both accelerated these trends and stressed retailers that relied on brick and mortar sales. Brooks Brothers was not immediately available for comment on news of the sale.

One day after Stein Mart filed for bankruptcy, a group of liquidators announced that all 279 of the off-price retailer's stores would close for good.

Going-out-of-business sales have already begun.

"New merchandise arriving in stores, as well as customers' favorite familiar brands, are deeply discounted and will sell out quickly at these low prices," a spokesperson for the liquidators — Gordon Brothers, Hilco Merchant Resources, Tiger Capital Group, B. Riley Financial's Great American Group, and SB360 Capital Partners — said in a press release.

"We are encouraging shoppers to take advantage of Stein Mart's abundant assortment of merchandise at substantial price reductions before it's too late."

Gift cards and rewards can still be used for a limited time. Store fixtures and furniture will also be for sale.

Estee Lauder is slashing up to 2,000 jobs and closing up to 15% of its stores globally

  • Estée Lauder announced its "Post-COVID Business Acceleration Program" on Thursday, a plan that involves a series of sweeping cuts in order to account for sales slumps during the pandemic.
  • As part of the plan, up to 2,000 jobs will be slashed and up to 15% of freestanding global stores will be permanently shuttered.
  • However, CEO Estee Lauder CEO Fabrizio Freda said in a call with investors on Thursday he is confident that growing categories like skincare will bolster the company moving forward.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Beauty giant Estée Lauder is slashing up to 2,000 jobs and permanently closing up to 15% of its total stores due to sales slumps amid the pandemic.

The company reported a 4% decrease in annual sales for the fiscal year ending on June 30 on Thursday, while at the same time announcing its "Post-COVID Business Acceleration Program," a two-year initiative designed to "rebalance investments to address the dramatic shifts in the distribution landscape and consumer behavior post-COVID-19."

According to a post on the Estée Lauder website, the plan involves a series of sweeping reductions, including cutting between 1,500 and 2,000 positions, "primarily point of sale employees and related support staff in the areas that were the most disrupted."

The plan will also involve the permanent closure of between 10-15% of its international freestanding stores, "as well as certain less productive department store counters that the company elects to close," the post reads.

Like many sectors of the retail industry, cosmetics have taken a hit due to shifting consumer demand, record unemployment rates, and the economic recession. Product categories lipstick have especially struggled, given the widespread use of masks that conceal the lips, though beauty companies including Estée Lauder have found bright spots in skincare and eye makeup

"COVID-19 and its wide-ranging impacts have also influenced consumer preferences and practices due to the closures of offices, retail stores and other businesses and the significant decline in social gatherings," Estée Lauder said in the press release. "The demand for skin care and hair care products has been more resilient than the demand for makeup and fragrance."

In a call with investors yesterday, Estée Lauder CEO Fabrizio Freda said skincare has "performed exceptionally well." Freda said that while the lipstick index — a term coined by Estee Lauder chairman Leonard Lauder in 2001 to explain the growth and resilience of lipstick sales during economic decline — may be obsolete, it has instead switched categories to skincare.

"Somebody was asking me if the lipstick index is finished ... [the] concept was that beauty is a resilient category, both in situations of crisis like this one and in particular situation of recession risk, because they are affordable purchases for indulging and taking care of yourself," Freda said on the call. "Consumers really love their routines. Now this has remained exactly true also in this crisis. What has changed is the category."

Toys R Us partners with Amazon on its relaunched website 3 years after toy retailer blamed Amazon for putting it out of business

toys r us amazon

  • Target has ended its relationship with Toys R Us as the exclusive fulfillment partner for the toy retailer's website and partnered with Amazon instead.
  • The Toys R Us website was relaunched in October 2019 under its new parent company, Tru Kids Brands.
  • Amazon will now support orders placed through the site, and buttons that previously redirected to Target.com now send consumers to Amazon web pages.
  • A Target spokesperson confirmed the end of the partnership, though did not provide any additional information on the matter.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Nearly three years after Toys R Us blamed Amazon for its dramatic downfall, the recently resuscitated toy brand is now leaning on the e-commerce giant to support its online orders.

Amazon will now serve as the primary fulfillment partner for orders placed through the Toys R Us website. The website was first relaunched in October 2019 as part of a joint venture with Target. According to a Target spokesperson, the "exclusive agreement" between the retailer and Tru Kids Brands — the parent company of Toys R Us — has officially ended and the company declined to share any additional information on the matter.

When Toys R Us debuted its relaunched website last fall, it served as a hub to browse products, read reviews, make wish lists, but not directly make purchases. Instead, consumers were directed to purchase toys by clicking on a button that sent them to Target.com — buttons that have since been replaced with links to Amazon.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that Toys R Us is now a "standard associate." (Toys R Us and Tru Kids Brands did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.)

Toys R Us has blamed both Amazon and Target for its demise. During bankruptcy proceedings in September 2017, Toys R Us wrote in its filing that companies like Amazon, Walmart, and Target began selling toys for such steep discounts during the 2016 holidays season that it "could not compete," creating a "perfect storm" that ultimately served as the nail in the coffin for the company.

Subsequent polls conducted in 2018 showed that Amazon was likely to have had the biggest impact in stealing sales from Toys R Us. According to a Stifel Financial consumer study at the time, Amazon was the preferred retailer for toys during the holiday season, with respondents listing toys, electronics, jewelry, and sporting goods as their top categories from the online retailer.

Despite the contention, it seems e-commerce companies may be the only way for the revitalized company to continue, as it has yet to build out its own fulfillment service. Even at its brick-and-mortar popups help during the 2019 holiday season, Toys R Us did not make any money directly from purchases, with sales going directly to manufacturers who cut the brand a fee to sell products in their stores.

"We don't make any money off of the sale of the goods," Phillip Raub — cofounder of b8ta, the experiential retailer that helped Toys R Us launch the popup stores —  told Business Insider in 2019

  • Nike is cutting ties with Zappos, Belk, Dillards, Boscov's, Bob's Stores, Fred Meyer, EBLens, VIM, and City Blue, according to a Susquehanna Financial Group report.
  • In response to the report, Nike said in part, "We are doubling down on our approach with Nike Digital and our owned stores, as well as a smaller number of strategic partners who share our vision to create a consistent, connected and modern shopping experience."
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Nike is cutting ties with a number of retailers, according to Sam Poser, an analyst for Susquehanna Financial Group.

The company will no longer sell its branded shoes and clothing to Zappos, Belk, Dillards, Boscov's, Bob's Stores, Fred Meyer, EBLens, VIM, and City Blue, Poser said in a research note on Monday.

Collectively, these retailers operate about 1,000 stores. The decision is "very good news" for Dick's Sport Goods, Hibbett Sports, and Shoe Carnival, Poser said. It should also provide a boost for Famous Footwear and Designer Brands' DSW. These stores are expected to continue to sell Nike branded shoes.

In a statement on Poser's report, Nike confirmed to Business Insider that it is slashing the number of "strategic partners" it works with. The company did not refute the list of retailers in Poser's report.

"Nike has a bold vision to create the marketplace of the future, one closely aligned with what consumers want and need," the company said in an e-mailed statement. "As part of our recently announced Consumer Direct Acceleration strategy, we are doubling down on our approach with Nike Digital and our owned stores, as well as a smaller number of strategic partners who share our vision to create a consistent, connected, and modern shopping experience."

The Consumer Direct Acceleration strategy is a digital-focused plan that Nike announced in June.

More than 225 Gap and Banana Republic stores will close this year

Gap

  • Gap Inc. is closing more than 225 Gap and Banana Republic stores this year, it said in its earnings release on Thursday.
  • The company was already planning on closing a number of stores this year, but the 225 figure is larger than originally planned.
  • Gap's net sales were down 28% for the quarter, while Banana Republic's net sales were down 52%.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Gap Inc. said in its quarterly earnings release on Thursday that it expects to close more than 225 Gap and Banana Republic stores globally this year, with more closures to come in 2021.

As of August 1, there were 1,643 Gap and Banana Republic stores. The 225 closures are net of new store openings. A number of these stores have already closed for good.

In total, Gap Inc. operates 3,814 store locations in 42 countries, including stores under the Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Athleta, and Janie and Jack brands.

Executives said on the earnings call that since the closures are affecting the Gap and Banana Republic brands, many of the shuttering stores are located in malls.

They said the company would provide more details during a virtual investor meeting on October 22.

Gap Inc. has closed hundreds of stores over the last several years. In February 2019, it said it would close 230 Gap stores over the next two years, with about half of those closures happening that year. With Thursday's update on store closures, the company is downsizing its store fleet more than originally planned.

Gap Inc. reported a 13% comparable sales increase for the quarter. Net sales were down 18% while online sales grew by 95%. Athleta was a bright spot for the company, with net sales up 6% and comparable sales up 19%.

The Gap and Banana Republic brands struggled, however. Gap's net sales were down 28%, while Banana Republic's net sales were down 52%.

"Banana Republic continues to focus on taking action to adjust to consumer preferences and improve inventory mix as the shift to casual fashion during the stay-at-home requirements has left the brand's workwear assortment disadvantaged," the company said in its earnings release.

Gap Inc. temporarily closed all of its stores this spring in response to the coronavirus pandemic. It said Thursday that about 90% of its stores have now reopened.

Why hello there, happy Friday.

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Bethany Biron, and I'm happy to announce I will be joining my colleague Shoshy Ciment to help deliver Insider Retail — our weekly round-up of everything you need to know about the world of restaurants and retail — to your inboxes.

So without further ado, I present this week in the wild and wonderful world of retail. (And if you haven't already subscribed, click here to get insights from myself and Shoshy in your inbox every Friday.)

Here's what you need to know:

Long-floundering malls are grasping for ways to reinvent

shopping mall

It's no secret that malls have had a spectacularly bad year — er, make that decade — thanks to the pandemic and the ongoing retail apocalypse. Now, the CEO of one of the largest mall operators, said the only way they can survive is by diversifying their tenant base — but not before calling malls "a lazy a-- business."

Lou Conforti, the CEO of mall operator Washington Prime Group, spoke with Business Insider's Madeline Stone about the future of the American mall. By the way, 'mall' is a word he prefers not to use because of its "negative connotation." Instead, he likes to use "retail venue."

The solution? According to Conforti, it's finding innovative ways to use the space, like converting sections into fulfillment centers, socially distanced exercise classes, or drive-in movie theaters.

"This has been a very passive industry," Conforti said. "We were rent collectors versus problem solvers or curators."

Luxury goods are booming in China, but Europe is struggling to keep up

FILE PHOTO: A company logo is pictured outside a Gucci store in Vienna, Austria, May 4, 2016. REUTERS/Leonhard Foeger

While luxury sales may have plummeted globally during the pandemic, sales of high-end goods in China are on the rise.

According to a recent poll conducted by UBS Evidence Lab, 3 in 10 Chinese consumers spent more than usual on luxury goods between January and July, despite luxury sales falling internationally by 30% during the same period.

However, this growth "comes at a cost to sectors abroad," writes Business Insider's Grace Dean. Due to international travel restrictions, most of these purchases have happened closer to home, straining business in Europe, where a significant percentage of luxury brands are based.

Prior to the pandemic, Chinese consumers — the world's largest luxury goods buyers — typically made 75% of their high-end purchases abroad. Now, only 9% of respondents to the UBS poll said they plan to buy high-end goods elsewhere, including the US.

Frightened retail employees push back against being forced to return to corporate offices

Calvin Klein

After the fraught reopening of the L'Oreal USA office earlier this year, another major retailer is facing criticism for mandating that employees return back to the workplace.

G-III Apparel Group has been requiring employees to return to work, despite concerns over health and safety. The company licenses and in some cases owns brands such as Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Guess, and DKNY.

Employees at the company's New York office told Shoshy Ciment they were told failure to comply would lead to retaliatory action. And consecutive "unexcused absences" from the office would lead to the equivalent of a "voluntary resignation."

"I don't really understand why [we're] sitting at our desks," one G-III employee said. "Is it just so we can look at each other?"

Britain's second-biggest grocer Sainsbury's has said it will cut 3,500 jobs and close 80% of standalone stores belonging to Argos, the catalog retail chain it bought in 2016.

The job cuts will mostly fall at the Argos stores, but they will also be lost in branches of Sainsbury's, where the grocer is closing all deli, fish, and meat counters.

Online sales across the group nearly doubled in the six months to September, it said Thursday, but it posted a £137 million ($178 million) pre-tax loss, caused mainly by its restructuring.

Sainsbury's will close 420 standalone Argos stores by March 2024, leaving about 100 open, it said in an earnings call Thursday.

But before then, it will open up to 150 Argos stores and 200 Argos collection points in its grocery stores, so that every Sainsbury's supermarket will have either an Argos store or a collection point.

While Sainsbury's is adding Argos hubs to its grocers, it will permanently close its meat, fish, and deli counters because of reduced demand. It temporarily closed the counters during the pandemic, and said Thursday that customers are happy buying these products in aisles.

The grocer will also triple the number of new products it launches each year, and introduce more hot food, sushi, and coffee-to-go. This comes as other grocers, such as Marks & Spencer, recorded notable declines in their food-to-go sales as people stay at home during the pandemic.

Sainsbury's also announced plans to open more grocery stores, even as it closes most of its Argos sites. Like fellow UK grocer the Co-op, the chain will open more convenience and slightly larger neighborhood stores over the next three years, in anticipation of customers wanting to shop locally.

Total retail sales for Sainsbury's were up 7.1% in the six months to September, which the grocer said was stronger than it expected. Online sales more than doubled, making up almost 40% of all sales.

But the company posted a £137 million ($178 million) pre-tax loss, which it said included £438 million ($570 million) in one-off costs associated with the Argos closures, alongside other strategic and market changes. Underlying pre-tax profit was £301 million ($392 million), it said.

The company said it expects underlying pre-tax profits for the year to March 2021 to increase by "at least" 5% year-on-year after the restructuring.

Sainsbury's also spent around £290 million ($377 million) on COVID-19 measures, though these were partially offset by £230 million ($299 million) in business rates relief.

CEO Simon Roberts said he would waive any potential bonus entitlement for the financial year.

The results aren't much of a surprise, Freetrade analyst David Kimberley told Business Insider.

"Even prior to the pandemic, investors were looking for more aggressive cost-cutting measures at Sainsbury's," he said, because of the business' "extremely tight margins."

"The problem is that margins are even tighter for online orders than they are in store, which may make some investors question how profitable all of these home deliveries actually are."

This holiday season has brought with it warnings for shoppers to get their gift-buying done early to avoid delays.

The US Postal Service's website currently warns customers: "USPS is experiencing unprecedented package increases and limited employee unavailability due to the impacts of COVID-19. We appreciate your patience and remain committed to delivering the holidays to you."

UPS and FedEx have issued similar alerts. UPS has also reportedly told drivers to stop picking up packages from some large retailers, including Macy's and Gap, as the holiday shipping season has picked up.

More people are shopping online due to the pandemic, and many are not traveling to celebrate holidays together in person with family and friends, instead sending gifts through the mail. It's a perfect storm of factors that could create more bottlenecks in the US' shipping networks.

For that reason Amit Sharma, CEO and founder of customer experience platform Narvar, said it's important for retailers to take responsibility and be proactive in their messaging about shipping delays.

Narvar doesn't ship packages itself — instead, it highlights shipping dates on product pages and at checkout so that consumers have a clear idea of when their orders will arrive. It sends out alerts via email or text if there are any delays in fulfillment or shipping.

In a recent survey of 1,161 US consumers, Narvar found that 36% had experienced substantial delays when receiving an online purchase. Only 19% said they were well-informed about the delay, which Narvar sees as an opportunity — retailers who ramped up their messaging around shipping issues saw an email open rate of 70% among consumers, according to the company.

Setting expectations is key to developing consumers' confidence in brands, Sharma says. It can also help to reduce the number of customer-service calls coming in to retailers.

"The retailer is taking that responsibility and giving the confidence that if there are issues or challenges, we will be the first one to notify you," he said in a recent interview with Business Insider, adding that if the delivery date comes and goes with no notification or delivery, that "chips away at the confidence and the trust that they have with the brand."

"Even if it's not good news, I would expect a retailer to inform me."

Founded in 2012, Narvar currently partners with more than 800 retailers, including Levi's, Home Depot, Sephora, and Patagonia. In addition to shipping communications, Narvar also helps retailers to facilitate returns, the rate of which have also exploded during the pandemic. Partner retailers pay a subscription fee to have access to Narvar's services.

Sharma founded Narvar after spending time at Williams-Sonoma, Walmart, and Apple, where he observed that even the top companies in retail did not offer much in terms of post-purchase messaging.

Those communications will be especially important this holiday season due to the difficult logistics environment.

Sharma said that while it would typically take between 1.6 and 1.8 days to prepare a package for shipment, that time frame went up to four days in the spring due to the pressures put on fulfillment and shipping along with exploding demand for e-commerce. That number has come down, but it started to go up again during Thanksgiving.

"We believe it is the retailer's responsibility to deliver goods and information," Sharma said. "That second part is not something that retailers thought to be part of their remit, but we believe the progressive retailers are taking measures to proactively keep customers updated. And that's how you build that trust and confidence with the consumer."

Narvar has raised $64 million in venture funding from investors including Accel and Battery Ventures.
